SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A 97-year-old woman has died in a house fire on the north side of Spokane.

The Spokane Fire Department has not released the victim’s name.

Neighbors reported the fire at 7:18 a.m. Tuesday.

Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer says the victim’s son awoke to a knocking sound, opened his bedroom door, encountered smoke and went outside. He attempted to go back inside to get the woman. But Schaeffer says at that point it was too dangerous to re-enter the house.

The fire’s cause has not been determined.
