EAST PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - The highest-ranking African-American in Congress is scheduled to speak at an NAACP banquet in East Peoria.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1v9pPdn ) U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina is set to attend the annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Nov. 22 for the nation’s oldest civil rights organization.

Clyburn is assistant Democratic leader, the third-highest Democratic position in the House behind House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. He served as the House majority whip from 2007-2011.

Clyburn was first elected to the House in 1993 and is up for re-election on Nov. 4.
