OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey woman is taking her own mother to court over ownership of a Chihuahua.

Jackie Biddle Shuler claims her mom initially agreed to give her the dog and then broke the promise.

Shuler flew her mother, Isabel Cotto, and the dog, who is named Bobby, from Puerto Rico in June.

Shuler’s lawyer, Kathleen McLaughlin, tells the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1wDd8Ke ) Cotto changed her mind about giving her daughter the dog and wants to return to Puerto Rico.

McLaughlin says Shuler spent $700 on veterinarian fees for the Chihuahua and the dog continues to live with her.

The case will be heard in Ocean Township because Shuler had served on the Long Branch City Council.
