BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Visibility is down to a few hundred feet in parts of central and south Alabama because of dense fog.

Traffic slowed to a crawl in some areas early Tuesday amid the heavy fog.

Several wrecks snarled rush-hour traffic around Birmingham but it’s unclear whether the crashes had anything to do with the weather.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory saying visibility was down to a quarter-mile and less across a broad section of central and southern Alabama.

Forecasters expected the fog to clear by midmorning.
