SAN DIEGO (AP) - A doctor says a man charged with killing three people - two in the parking lot of a San Diego mall last Christmas Eve - is mentally incompetent to stand trial.

U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1tAS5J9 ) says a court-appointed psychiatrist stated that view Monday for Carlo Mercado.

However, a judge didn’t immediately rule on whether the 29-year-old should be sent to a mental hospital until he’s judged able to help with his defense. Instead, the hearing was delayed a week so prosecutors can decide whether to seek a trial on the issue.

Prosecutors say Mercado shot Salvatore Belvedere and Ilona Flint, both 22, on Dec. 24.

The body of Flint’s fiancé and Belvedere’s brother, Gianni, was found in a car trunk in Riverside nearly a month later.

He’d also been shot.
