EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - The East St. Louis school district has asked the FBI to investigate allegations that a female teacher had an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old boy.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1wa9iKk ) an East St. Louis District 189 spokeswoman said Monday the special education teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The teacher hasn’t been charged.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Gilda Johnson says the department turned the case over to the FBI but declined to say why. An FBI spokesman declined to comment to the newspaper.

The boy’s mother says the teacher took the boy across the state line to St. Louis, which would make it a federal issue. She says the teacher sent the boy inappropriate text messages, gave him money and took him out to dinner.
