STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Davidson County sheriff’s deputy has shot and killed a man being transported for a mental evaluation.

Multiple media outlets reported the shooting happened after a struggle around 3:30 p.m. Monday on Interstate 40 northeast of Statesville.

The man’s name has not been released.

The deputy has been suspended with pay while the shooting is investigated. The officer’s name has not been released.

Chief Deputy Maj. Brian Grubb said the prisoner had been involuntarily committed to a hospital in Davidson County and was being transported to another hospital.

The sheriff’s office said the prisoner was in the back of the deputy’s vehicle when a struggle broke out.

Grubb said it’s unclear exactly what happened. The officer was not hurt.
