FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Genesee County prosecutors say a fatal shooting by a Flint Township police officer was justified and charges won’t be issued against him.

The prosecutor’s office said Monday it has finished reviewing the Michigan State Police investigation of the July shooting that killed 23-year-old Dominique Lewis. It says the unidentified officer acted within Michigan law when he shot Lewis in self-defense and to prevent him from escaping.

Prosecutors say Lewis moved from the backseat of a car to the driver’s seat during a traffic stop and search. They say Lewis drove at an officer and nearly hit him. The officer fired two shots at Lewis, who later died at a hospital.

Prosecutors say a loaded gun was found in the car and Lewis had ammunition matching the bullets in the gun.
