GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A Greenville man has been charged with trying to strangle his girlfriend, who later disappeared and was found trapped in a ravine.

Authorities told local media outlets the attack on 24-year-old Kimara Hughey occurred the week before she was reported missing.

Sheriff’s spokesman Jonathan Smith said Hughey did not report the attack until they interviewed her on how she disappeared Oct. 14.

She was found Oct. 19 in a briar patch.

Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Lee Crosby is charged with attempted murder and aggravated criminal domestic violence. It was not clear if he has a lawyer. Smith said deputies do not expect charges in her disappearance unless they receive new information.

Warrants state Crosby threw Hughey against a washing machine and into a closet and tried to strangle her Oct. 11.
