ELKO, Nev. (AP) - A man suspected of strangling his estranged wife to death in Elko more than three years ago has been arrested in Mexico.

Elko Police Chief Ben Reed told the Elko Daily Free Press on Monday (https://tinyurl.com/kyxtt92) that 32-year-old Eduardo Puentes Estrada was taken into custody on Sunday after he apparently was involved in a fight in Puerto Vallarta. Authorities say his extradition to Nevada could take anywhere from six months to two years.

An Elko justice of the peace issued a warrant for Estrada’s arrest for murder four days after Stephanie Gonzalez was killed in her Elko home in June 2011. Federal prosecutors later issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The FBI said he allegedly was involved in drugs and gangs.
