MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a Colorado woman to 25 years in prison for kidnapping her newborn nephew from a Wisconsin home and leaving him behind at an Iowa gas station.

Judge James Peterson said Monday in U.S. District Court in Madison that he didn’t give Kristen Smith more time, because she’s mentally ill. But he still branded her a liar who launched an elaborate scheme to take 4-day-old Kayden Powell and pass him off as her own.

Choking back tears, Smith apologized to the baby’s mother and her half sister, Brianna Marshall, who was sitting in the front row of the courtroom with Kayden in her arms.

West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan found the child in February in a closed storage crate outside a BP gas station.
