MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A Muncie man cried as he testified in court that he didn’t know what he could have done to stop his wife from fatally abusing her young Haitian cousin.

Fifty-five-year-old Marcus Tabb testified Tuesday he lived apart from his wife and didn’t know that 5-year-old Marie Pierre was being abused before her June 2013 death.

The Star Press reports (https://tspne.ws/1FTPyiq) Tabb acknowledged lying to investigators about living with his wife because saying otherwise would’ve been abandoning her. Tabb is on trial for child neglect charges, with Delaware County prosecutors saying he failed to contact authorities about the abuse or remove Marie from the home.

Charlene Tabb was sentenced in July to 87 years in prison for her cousin’s death and mistreatment of her own 11-, 14- and 16-year-old siblings.
