ATLANTA (AP) - The City of Atlanta has been awarded a $2.5 million federal grant to try reducing children’s exposure to lead paint.

City officials say the grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is for the city’s lead hazard control program Lead Safe Atlanta, which launched in 2011. Officials say the program is focused on identifying housing built before 1978 where lead-based paint is present and educating residents to reduce children’s exposure to it.

Exposure to lead-based paint in children under age six has been linked to several behavioral and health issues.
