SAO PAULO (AP) - Popular Brazilian club Corinthians will have to play one home match away from its stadium as punishment for fan violence.

Brazil’s sports tribunal issued the ruling on Friday because of a confrontation between different Corinthians fan groups at the Itaquerao Stadium on Sept. 21.

The supporters clashed in the stands and police had to intervene with batons to disperse the crowd. The groups apparently were fighting for space behind one of the goals at the venue recently built for the 2014 World Cup.

If Corinthians loses an appeal, it will have to play its Brazilian league match against Vitoria on Oct. 22 at least 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Sao Paulo.

Atletico Mineiro and league leader Cruzeiro also were ordered to play away from home recently because of fan violence.
