DETROIT (AP) - Efforts are taking place to promote the use of citizen patrols in Detroit to help fight crime.

Councilman Scott Benson is hosting a meeting Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lasky Recreation Center for those interested in participating in radio patrols.

In a statement, Benson says the patrols “provide a tremendous presence in communities by letting people know that this is a community that cares and watches out for suspicious behavior.”

The Detroit Police Department and the Detroit Recreation Department are involved in the effort. Such patrols are used in other cities.
