HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - A Coopersville man who police say admitted to dumping his mother’s body in the Grand River is in jail on $100,000 bond.

Fifty-year-old Michael Roersma was arraigned Thursday in Holland on a charge of lying to an officer in a violent crime investigation. Authorities say fishermen found the body of his 72-year-old mother, Sharon Roersma, in the western Michigan river Monday after she was beaten to death.

An autopsy determined she died of blunt force trauma to the head and a broken neck.

Michael Roersma tells investigators he was with her when she died and he dumped her body in the river.

He was on probation in Ottawa County on a drug possession charge. He was arraigned Thursday on a probation violation after he admitted in court to infractions including using heroin.
