DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police have charged an Iowa mother in the death of her 4-month-old son.

Police said Thursday that 34-year-old Jessica Jo Rainer is charged with child endangerment causing serious injury and neglect of a dependent person. Medics found the child unresponsive on April 15 after a 911 call by Rainer. The boy suffered a skull fracture.

Police Sgt. Jason Halifax tells the Des Moines Register a medical examiner was unable to determine if that injury killed the child. He says the charges pertain to the injury, not the death.

Rainer has been in the Polk County Jail on prescription drug charges since Aug. 19. She is being held on $50,000 bond. Online records didn’t indicate an attorney.

The Iowa Department of Human Services is caring for the deceased child’s twin.
