SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) - A sighting of a large cat that a Scarborough resident says could be a mountain lion or a bobcat has rekindled a debate about whether mountain lions live in Maine.

But the Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1rDvtbl ) reports that wildlife officials said the photograph showed a bobcat, not a mountain lion, wandering through a backyard on Sept. 26.

Whether mountain lions, also called cougars, live in Maine is a source of ongoing debate. Bobcats do live in Maine and are the subject of a hunting season in the state that begins on Dec. 1.

The woman who took the picture of the animal says she has not let her child go outside the house since the sighting.
