SEASIDGE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) - Seaside Heights has settled an excessive force lawsuit for $500,000.

George Hatze of Toms River claimed police used pepper spray and fractured his back by throwing him to the boardwalk during a dispute at the Fourth of July fireworks display in 2012.

Hatze said the confrontation began when an officer on a bicycle ran into him and his family.

His lawyer, Thomas Mallon, tells the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1tmFPrC ) Hatze was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Those charges were dismissed and the 48-year-old pleaded guilty to violating a municipal ordinance.

The settlement agreement is confidential. However, the town and its police officers did not admit any wrongdoing.
