TROY, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has commended changes that are being made under his leadership in Detroit during a town hall event with voters.

MLive.com reports (https://bit.ly/1x4TSFP ) the Republican governor spoke in Troy on Thursday as part of his re-election campaign. He told the crowd of about 200 people that Michigan is “poised to be a great state again.”

Snyder says Michigan leaders have been clearing the way for improvements in Detroit as they move through the bankruptcy process. He says blight removal efforts and street light additions are positive changes, but more can be done in Detroit neighborhoods.

Supporters of Snyder’s Democratic challenger Mark Schauer demonstrated outside the venue before the town hall. They say Snyder hasn’t done enough as governor to help the poor and middle class.
