BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jon Tester says he’s pushing for construction of a veterans’ nursing home in Butte.

The Montana Democrat told The Montana Standard (https://bit.ly/1nTnEgR ) editorial board that he wants to bring Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald to Butte in hopes of circumventing VA policy that’s holding up construction.

Democratic state Sen. Jon Sesso of Butte says the state has set aside its $4.8 million share of the cost. The federal government would provide another $9 million.

The proposed home, which would house about 60 veterans, was placed on the VA’s Priority List in 2012, but has since stalled.

Tester says part of the problem is the VA is focusing on getting its existing facilities up to date, rather than building new ones.

Montana also has veterans’ homes in Columbia Falls and Glendive.
