WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The Wilmington City Council has voted against a proposed ban on smoking at parks, playgrounds and bus shelters.

The council voted 6-5 against the bill on Thursday. It would have expanded the reach of an existing smoking ordinance that applies to classrooms, government offices, libraries and museums.

Some members of the council said the bill would have infringed too much on smokers’ personal freedom.
