OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a fire that killed an Opelousas woman.

KATC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1xMoiA2 ) that the fire happened Thursday night.

The victim was 63-year-old Vera Gabriel, who was found lying on the floor in the home’s kitchen when firefighters arrived. First responders were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the fire appears to have started on a sofa. Matches and smoking materials were found nearby but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
