ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - A judge has set a $100,000 bail for a man charged with second-degree murder in the case of a 13-year-old disabled boy who died after vodka was added to an IV line to quiet him down.

Thirty-eight-year-old Walter Richters had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, but the hearing was canceled after prosecutors and his defense attorney reached agreement on the bail.

On Tuesday, Richters’ 39-year-old girlfriend, Melissa Robitille, was freed from jail after a judge set a $25,000 unsecured bond and questioned prosecutors’ decision to file a murder charge in the case rather than manslaughter.

Robitille and Richters both pleaded not guilty in the August death of Robitille’s 13-year-old son, Isaac Robitille.

The Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/103H9Io ) reports that unlike Robitille, Richters has no ties to the area.
