GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. (AP) - Crews have worked for a second day to try to recover the body of a 59-year-old man who died after a trench collapsed and buried him in suburban Detroit.

Grosse Pointe Woods police officers responded around midday Wednesday and freed Leland Rumph’s head. They were giving him oxygen when a secondary collapse covered his head and injured an officer.

Crews were unable to remove Rumph’s body on Wednesday and continued the work Thursday.

Police say the body hadn’t been recovered by 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Rumph owned a construction business. Authorities say he was working to help install a sewer line.

Authorities say an investigation will be needed to determine whether the digging work was being done properly.
