DETROIT (AP) - Prosecutors have filed child abuse and firearms charges against a Detroit man whose 6-year-old son shot himself in the hand while playing with a handgun.

The office of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says that 31-year-old Decovier English was arraigned Thursday and says a judge set his bond at $10,000. A probable cause is scheduled Nov. 13.

It’s unknown if English posted bond. The county jail’s phone repeatedly rang busy Thursday evening.

Police say the boy shot himself Wednesday night on Detroit’s east side. Police Sgt. Michael Woody says the boy’s mother took him to a hospital and says his injuries aren’t life-threatening.

Woody says the loaded gun was unsecured in a closet.

Corine English says her son is a loving man who “takes good care of his kids.”
