ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - A new giraffe calf at the Detroit Zoo now has a name: Mpenzi.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says Thursday the name can be translated from Swahili to mean “love.”

The zoo says it got thousands of name suggestions and the Detroit Zoological Society invited the public to vote among five finalists while supporting giraffe conservation with a donation. Mpenzi was the entry that drew the largest amount of financial backing.

The zoo says $1,141 from the effort will be donated to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The Detroit Zoological Society is chipping in with a $5,000 grant to the foundation.

The reticulated giraffe was born Sept. 30 to 5-year-old Kivuli following a 15-month gestation. The father of the male calf is 6-year-old Jabari.
