MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a civil complaint has been filed against a Memphis dermatologist accused of defrauding Medicare.

The U.S. attorney’s office for West Tennessee said Thursday the complaint has been filed against Dr. George Woodbury and his medical practice, Rheumatology & Dermatology Associates.

The complaint alleges Woodbury and his practice presented false claims to Medicare for dermatological procedures from January 2008 until December 2011.

Prosecutors say Woodbury presented a large volume of claims to Medicare for adjacent tissue transfers or grafts that were either not supported by documentation or medically unnecessary. Woodbury also is accused of falsely billing for other medical procedures and for unnecessary office visits.

The lawsuit seeks damages and penalties under the False Claims Act. Court records do not show if Woodbury has a lawyer.
