PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is mourning the death of the longest serving mayor for New England’s largest city.

Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino died Thursday morning at age 71. He had been diagnosed with advanced cancer in February 2014, shortly after leaving office.

Taveras paid tribute to Menino, saying the country has lost an irreplaceable leader and honorable public servant who loved Boston and his great country.

Taveras said he will always be grateful for the generosity Menino showed with his time and advice.

The mayor of Providence said he is especially thankful for their last visit earlier this month during which Menino was “full of optimism for the future.”

Taveras has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Menino.

Menino is survived by his wife, two children and six grandchildren.
