BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota State University senior running back Zach Zenner is a finalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, while North Dakota State senior linebacker Esley Thorton is no longer in the running.

The trophy is given to the football player deemed the best scholar-athlete in the nation. The National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame announced the 17 finalists on Thursday, from a pool of 169 semifinalists that also included Thorton.

The finalists all receive the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award and an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The sole winner of the Campbell Trophy and $25,000 in postgraduate funds will be named Dec. 9.

Zenner is a biology/pre-medicine major with a 3.87 grade-point average.
