YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - The Yakama Tribal Council says it will sue the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency over plans to clean up Hanford’s 300 Area.

The tribe has filed a required 60-day notice of its intent to sue the agencies in federal court.

The tribe says the selected cleanup actions for the 300 Area, which is adjacent to the city of Richland, do not protect human health and the environment as required by law.

The Yakama Nation is not seeking any monetary damages, but instead wants the court to order a new cleanup plan to protect the Columbia River and the health of future generations.

The tribe says hazardous chemical and radioactive wastes contaminate the soil and groundwater beneath the 300 Area.
