BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police are investigating the shooting of a Birmingham taxi driver during an attempted robbery.

Birmingham police say the bullet went straight through the driver’s arm. WBRC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1zm51Gj) that he was taken to UAB Hospital and was expected to survive.

Authorities say the crime happened around 9 a.m. Thursday in the area of 83rd Street South and Vassar Avenue.

Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards said the suspect had hopped in the backseat of the cab and asked to be taken to a gas station. He said that instead of paying for his ride, the suspect pulled a gun and demanded money.

Edwards said the cab driver hit the gas in an attempt to leave, but the suspect fired a shot, striking him in the arm.

Police were searching for the suspect.
