CHICAGO (AP) - A judge has sentenced a Chicago man to nearly three decades behind bars for robbing and assaulting a 78-year-old who later died.

The Cook County state’s attorney office says in a Friday statement that 20-year-old Dalvin Rayford robbed the man in his own backyard on Chicago’s South Side, knocking him down and beating him. The victim died weeks later from complications from a hip fracture he suffered during the attack.

Rayford pleaded guilty to armed robbery Thursday and Cook County Judge Michael McHale imposed a 28-year prison sentence the same day.

As Rayford rummaged through the victim’s pockets in the 2012 robbery, a neighbor called police and also yelled for help. Prosecutors say police caught Rayford in a nearby alley as he fled.

Friday’s statement didn’t name the victim.
