CHICAGO (AP) - Construction has begun on a new, $53 million Illinois National Guard facility south of Chicago.

The Army Aviation Support Facility and Readiness Center in Kankakee will include helicopter maintenance and storage hangars, classrooms and fire suppression systems. The hangar space is designed for the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, as well as a weapons simulator.

A Thursday statement from the Illinois National Guard says the facility should be completed by early 2016. It’ll house three companies and their equipment. The construction costs are being covered by both state and federal funds.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday.
