WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Police in northern New York say a woman has been accused of trying to put a murder contract on her son-in-law.

WWNY-TV in Watertown reports (https://goo.gl/L5rTeH ) that 57-year-old Melisa Rae Schonfield of Brownville was arrested Friday morning after meeting with a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department detective who claimed to be a hit man.

Investigators say the scheme involved paying $11,000 to kill 36-year-old Ernesto Negrillo of Florida, with half of the payment handed over during the meeting Friday.

The undercover detective said Schonfield suggested getting rid of Negrillo’s body by throwing it “to the alligators.”

There was no immediate information about a motive. Police investigated after getting a tip.

Schonfield is being held on second-degree conspiracy and second-degree criminal solicitation charges. A message left for her lawyer wasn’t initially returned.
