SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Two influential aviation groups have given more than a half-million dollars in support of a ballot measure that aims to save Santa Monica’s airport.

The Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/1zkD8hU ) reports Friday that the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the National Business Aviation Association have donated a combined $540,000 so far to the campaign for Measure D.

The measure would stop efforts close Santa Monica Municipal Airport until the public can vote on proposals for its future.

The airport has long been a source of complaints from surrounding residents, and supporters of the measure say the City Council has undertaken a “starvation strategy” that would cut flights, shorten the runway, or close the airport altogether.

Other donors to the measure include actor Harrison Ford, who stores his plane at the airport.
