GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - The Greenville Public School District is kicking off its citywide reading initiative Nov. 7 at the Jessie McBride Pre-Kindergarten Academy.

Another event is scheduled for Nov. 11 at the Melissa Manning Curriculum Center.

School officials tell the Delta Democrat-Times (https://bit.ly/1vl52DJ ) the events are intended to bring together volunteers, mentors and supporters of the initiative to share ideas to help enhance the program.

The program is an outgrowth of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which took effect this school year. It requires that third-graders read at a third-grade level or above to be promoted

Officials say kindergarten through third-grade students’ reading skills were assessed at the beginning of the school year and will be re-assessed when the year ends.

The school system will provide additional reading support and instruction for struggling students.
