PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man has pleaded guilty to child abuse in the death of his live-in girlfriend’s young son in 2012.

Juan Garcia made his plea Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 5.

The boy’s mother already has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and child abuse in the case.

Court records show Garcia was 18 at the time of the incident on Feb. 24, 2012.

Phoenix police say when 2-year-old Jorge Zamora-Rogel wouldn’t come out of his room for dinner, Garcia got him out of his bedroom and pulled him down the hallway by his ear.

Police say Garcia grabbed the child by the throat, lifted him off the ground and slammed his head into a bedroom wall multiple times.
