PERU, Vt. (AP) - State police say an elderly Vermont couple has drowned in a small pond in the town of Peru.

Police say the bodies of 81-year-old Lawrence Daley and 80-year-old Ruth Daley were found Thursday after neighbors became concerned that they hadn’t been seen in a few days.

Police say Lawrence Daley was a caretaker for the property that included the pond. The investigation found that the Daleys were known to use a small boat at this time of year to prepare the pond for winter.

The Daleys knew how to swim, but police say medical conditions are believed to have contributed to their deaths.

Police say nothing suspicious was found at the scene and foul play is not suspected.
