SAN DIEGO (AP) - A rescued sea lion has died, days after getting hooked with a fisherman’s gaff off the San Diego County coast.

The animal was discovered Sunday on the shoreline rocks at La Jolla Cove with the horseshoe-size hook in its back. The bamboo gaff was about 10 feet long.

A veterinarian was able to extract the hook and the young adult sea lion was being cared for at Sea World.

Spokesman David Koontz said Thursday that the sea lion died.

U-T San Diego reports (https://bit.ly/1E6ZKSN ) blood tests suggest the 200-pound animal had a significant wound infection.
