RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Up to 10 inches of snow is expected to fall in parts of the mountains of western North Carolina.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for eight counties from 8 p.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

The warning is in effect in Ashe, Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Swain, Watauga and Yancey counties.

Forecasters say up to 10 inches of snow could fall at higher elevations on the western side of the mountains. Up to 6 inches of snow is expected elsewhere in the area.

A winter weather advisory is in effect in parts of three counties. About 3 inches of snow is possible Buncombe, Graham and northern Jackson counties.
