MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Robert Bentley is following a tradition among Alabama governors and giving state employees extra time off during the holidays.

Bentley sent a letter to state department heads saying he has authorized holidays for the Friday after Thanksgiving and the Friday after Christmas.

He said all state offices will be closed on those dates, except those where it is essential to maintain staff. He said any employee required to work on the holidays should be allowed time off as soon as possible after the holiday.

Alabama governors have traditionally given state employees extra time off during the holiday season.
