CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago man has been honored as Illinois Veteran of the Month for September.

Jaime P. Pesongco is a veteran of World War II. He joined the U.S. Armed Forces in the Far East as a young man in the Philippines, joining the resistance after imperial Japanese forces had overrun the Allies in 1942. He then served for more than 30 months providing support to the American and Allied troops.

He was honored for his work in helping homeless veterans. He was nominated by Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Chicago President Marty Smith.

The ceremony for Pesongco was held Thursday in Chicago at the Consulate General’s Office of the Philippines.

The monthly recognition program highlights veterans’ leadership, dedication, innovation, and impact in serving their communities.
