BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - A 30-day public comment period is beginning for a plan to expand the boundaries of the Homestead National Monument of America in southeast Nebraska.

Beatrice radio station KWBE reports (https://bit.ly/1vAzKKF ) that the comment period began Friday. A public presentation of the plan will be made at an open house at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the monument’s education center.

Studies for the plan have been prepared. Any decision to go forward will consider whether additional parcels of land should be included, how they would be zoned and the effect on land use, the view and park management resources.

Any expansion of the boundary would require congressional action.
