AMES, Iowa (AP) - Hundreds of people attended a memorial service to remember an Iowa State University student from China whose body was found last week.

The crowd of about 250 gathered in a circle Friday night on the Iowa State campus to remember 20-year-old Tong Shao, The Des Moines Register reported (https://dmreg.co/1pRtGZy ). The service was held by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

Tong’s body was found in her car trunk on Sept. 27. Investigators want to talk with a 23-year-old Iowa City man who they say could have information about Tong’s death, but they believe he might be in China.

Tong, a junior chemical engineering student, had been missing for three weeks before her body was found.

On Friday, friends and university faculty described her as kind and intelligent. They said she had a bright future.

“She may have come up with a great discovery that would have changed the world,” said James Dorsett, director of International Students and Scholars at Iowa State University.

Tong’s roommate, Zhiyi Sun, thanked the crowd for attending the service and for reaching out to the family and friends.

“It is comforting for us and her family to be assured she’s loved and remembered,” Zhiyi said.
