PALATKA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate has died of an apparent suicide at the Putnam County jail, the second such death in recent weeks.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office reports that 66-year-old Dennis King was found early Friday in his cell. Officials say King used a bed sheet to make the rope he used to strangle himself.

King was being held on several child pornography charges, and authorities say he was distraught.

Authorities say King had no cell mate and waited until lights were out to asphyxiate himself.

The Florida Times-Union (https://bit.ly/1rIOYwF) reports that his death is similar to that of 39-year-old inmate Timothy Walrath, who died by the same means in his cell on Sept. 17. Sheriff’s Sgt. Hancel Woods says similarities in the case are coincidental, and neither man suggested they were suicidal.
