SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Rock Island man has been sentenced to life in prison for two armed robberies.

U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis of the central district of Illinois says that federal Judge Sara Darrow found the life term was appropriate because the 28-year-old Dixon has two previous state robbery convictions.

The government provided evidence that showed Dixon had been on parole fewer than two weeks when he entered the Union Federal Savings & Loan in Viola in November 2012, threatened to shoot a teller and made off with $31,000. The government says Dixon also robbed the 1st Community Bank in Sherrard in December a month later. There, he pointed what appeared to be a gun and took $5,700.

Rock Island police officer investigated and recognized Dixon from his approach to robbery.
