MIDLAND, Wash. (AP) - A Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman says a man accused of ramming several patrol cars during a chase has been shot and wounded by deputies.

The News Tribune reports (https://is.gd/iyfYOL ) that spokesman Ed Troyer says the man was hospitalized under guard Friday night and is expected to survive. He was described as in his teens or early 20s.

No deputies were hurt.

The incident started Friday afternoon with a report of someone in a silver Acura going through neighborhood mailboxes in the community of Midland. Troyer says neighbors asked the man to leave but he refused, appearing to be drunk or high.

When deputies arrived, the man drove away slowly at first, then faster. Deputies were able to spin out the man’s car but he continued driving the disabled vehicle, ramming patrol cars before deputies opened fire.
