WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - The Republican candidate for an open House seat in northern New York has been chosen to give the party’s weekly address.

Elise Stefanik (stah-FAHN’-ick) gets the high-profile assignment as she runs against Democrat Aaron Woolf. The two candidates are in a hotly contested race for the seat held by retiring Democratic Rep. Bill Owens.

Stefanik’s address is being released Saturday.

House Speaker John Boehner says Stefanik will bring new ideas to Washington about expanding opportunities.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says Stefanik is beholden to the “far right wing.”
