ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - One of three winners of the Nobel Prize in chemistry is originally from Michigan.

Eric Betzig’s biography says he was born in Ann Arbor. He previously worked in Michigan, including for his father’s Ann Arbor Machine Co. in Chelsea.

The 54-year-old and two other scientists won the honor for finding ways to make microscopes more powerful than previously thought possible.

Betzig works at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Ashburn, Virginia. In a statement, he says: “We can at least dream now about being able to see within the cell on the molecular level, which is where all the action is.”
